Hassan Anderson’s single mother sacrificed deeply for her musically gifted son, working several jobs at once and selling her car to purchase his first oboe.

The mother and son’s years of hard work paid off Saturday, May 9, when Anderson earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Orchestral Instrumentation, with honors, from Stetson University in DeLand. His mother, Carolyn Anderson, was in the audience of several thousand in Stetson’s Edmunds Center.

An active commitment to aiding animals helped Stetson University student Angelina Suarez ’12 earn a Florida Campus Compact 2008 Excellence in Service award, the only one presented to a private-university student in the state. Announced earlier this week, the award honors Suarez for making a positive impact on the community through a contribution of service.
